CASE STUDY: When a supplier became a conflict

A company operating a sizeable vehicle fleet identified irregularities involving its maintenance operation and an outside supplier. What initially appeared to be isolated issues with tires, repairs and vendor invoices began to suggest a broader pattern.

The employee at the centre of the investigation held a position of trust and had significant involvement with outside service providers. The key question was whether his relationship with one supplier had crossed from a legitimate business relationship into one involving undisclosed personal benefit.

We conducted an in-depth interviews and a review of vendor invoices, purchasing records and supporting documentation. That analysis helped uncover a pattern of irregular transactions, incomplete records and inconsistencies that warranted closer examination.

An investigative interview of the employee then explored how purchases were authorized, how goods and services were received, and the employee’s personal dealings with the supplier. The employee acknowledged a close relationship with the vendor and admitted purchasing tires and related products for his own vehicle through that relationship, sometimes paying cash and receiving favourable pricing.

The investigation also identified communications and dealings that occurred outside normal business channels. Most significantly, hidden-camera surveillance documented the employee receiving an envelope containing cash as payment for his involvement.

Taken together, the invoice analysis, documentary irregularities, personal dealings with the supplier and surveillance evidence transformed what initially appeared to be a purchasing-control issue into a serious conflict-of-interest and fraud investigation.

The evidence demonstrated that the concern was not limited to individual invoices. The underlying relationship between the employee and the supplier was central to understanding how the transactions occurred and why normal controls had been circumvented.

By combining financial analysis, investigative interviewing and covert surveillance, investigators were able to identify the pattern behind the transactions and establish evidence that went far beyond administrative irregularities. Ultimately, the employee lost his job, was charged criminally and pleaded guilty to the charges.

If you reviewed your vendor invoices closely, would the numbers tell the whole story—or point to a relationship worth investigating?

CASE STUDY: Unmasking an online identity

Sometimes the answer is there if you dig deep enough. A false name and a false location was used to conceal the person behind an online harassment and extortion campaign. By comparing small inconsistencies across multiple profiles, we established the individual’s identity, traced them to their actual location, and preserved the evidence without alerting them to the investigation.
